About the Artists
At its core, Darshan is the creative and contemplative collaboration between Shir Yaakov Feinstein-Feit and Eden “Eprhyme” Pearlstein. Together, these two juxtapose diverse sounds and styles in an artistic act of bridge building.
The group is exceptionally versatile, playing both stripped down acoustic (and even a capella) sets, as well as full force, multi-instrumental concerts. Fans uncomfortable or unfamiliar with hip-hop are able to appreciate this complex and moving music when it’s slowed down and softened up. The big, plugged-in, live band festival and club sets resonate with the younger and/or more rock-oriented crowd.
As Modern Midrash Makers, Darshan offers a wide variety of presentations, including facilitated text study sessions, shabbatons, melaveh malkas, children’s programs and weddings.
Shir Yaakov
Whether as an officiant at weddings and lifecycle events, or as one-half of the world-hop duo Darshan; in synagogues, yeshivas, and intentional communities around the world; and in Jewish, multi-faith, and non-affiliated spiritual contexts, Shir weaves a tapestry of Kabbalistic wisdom, contemporary songwriting, and deep personal spirituality.
He has recorded six albums of original music, and has written over three hundred poems. As a rabbi and spiritual leader, he has led services and ritual in a wide variety of contexts, from Hasidic yeshivas to multifaith, LGBTQ, and earth-based spiritual groups.
Shir Yaakov currently serves as the Musical Director of New York City’s Renewal Congregation Romemu.
Eprhyme
Eprhyme (pronounced E-prime) is a renaissance MC, representing a profound resurgence of depth and dope within an all-too-often formulaic, uninspired and commercialized art form. Active within hip hop culture, the d.i.y indie arts world and the contemporary jewish music scene, Eprhyme is constantly and creatively crossing boundaires of substance, sound and style. Eprhyme’s rhymes are smart and subtle, as he weaves together story-telling, social commentary, literary references and intricate wordplay to portray multi-dimensional perspectives on everything from spirituality to art history to the environment. The lines have been blurred, genres forgotten, stereotypes seen through. The music speaks for itself. All you gotta do is listen.
The most recent transmission of the K Singles Zip-Pak featured selections from the upcoming album Dopestylevsky [KLP230] by innovative and boundary-crossing rapper Eprhyme. Combining live and electronic elements with contemporary storytelling and timeless soul searching, these songs represent a unique marriage of secular and spiritual aesthetics. Pulling from Esoteric Jewish sources and tradition, scenes from city life, bouts of emotional turmoil and Hip Hop History, Eprhyme is a poetic midwife for a new brand of American Independent Music, and the first Hip Hop artist K has released in over a decade.
These recordings were made in Olympia, Wa. with Smoke of Oldominion.
Eprhyme’s debut solo album, WAYWORDWONDERWILL, is a kaleidoscopic counter-cultural exchange program formystics, punks and b-boys. The album features production by Smoke of Oldominion and guest vocal appearances by artist, activist and author Nomy Lamm. Lyrically, Eprhyme is a well versed tour guide who owes as much to Rebbe Nachman and Robert Anton Wilson as he does to John Coltrane and KRS-ONE.
